Responsive design is one of the web design industry big buzz words right now. If your wondering what this is and why you should care (which you should if you have a web site) read on and I will give you the details in simple term if your not a nerd!
If you look at the image to the left, this web site is a good example of a web site that was built using responsive design technologies. Basically it comes down to adding code to a web site that detects the users screen size and adjusts what the web site looks like so it can easy be seen on a phone, tablet or computer.
The web site is a single site which adjusts what it looks like based on what the user is using to access the site. In the old days, web designers would direct the user to a separate web site if they were on a mobile device. With responsive, this is not needed. Its pretty cool technology and makes web site much more user friendly for visitors regardless of what type of device they are.
Now the fun part, if your saying to yourself, who cares about all of this responsive design mumbo jumbo? Technology changes fast and now more than ever, people are accessing the Internet with their phones and tablets. A site that is not responsive will be hard to read on these devices (especially a phone) and probably will cause visitors to the site to hit the back button and not contacting the business to inquire or purchase the service or products they are selling. Simply these businesses are turning away potential money if they do not have a responsive design web site.
If you don’t know if your site is set up with responsive technology, try visiting your site with your mobile phone. Compare it to our site (which is responsive), notice how the navigation changes and how large the text is to read (or not read) without having to expand the site manually in your phones web browser.
I did a little bit of research on cell phone use and found some very interesting information from the Pew Institute. The research found that 91% of American adults own a cell phone and many use the devices for much more than phone calls. In fact 60% of cell phone owners access the Internet with their phone.
In fact from 2009 – 2013 there was a significant increase of people accessing the Internet from their phone (take a look at the image to left) from 29% – 60% (you can click on the image to make it bigger if you can’t read it) Also, those with an annual household income of over $75,000 a year are particularly likely to access the internet via cell phone.
In other words, these are people with the money to spend to buy your service or products!
What is crazy about this is, the numbers now may even be higher and the trend is moving away from the traditional PC accessing the Internet to the phone type devices. You can checkout the full article by Pew Research here: http://www.pewinternet.org/2013/09/19/cell-phone-activities-2013/. I think you will find this an interesting read if your using a web site to promote and market your business.
Is your site responsive? If not, we would love help you design a new site with modern responsive design technology. The numbers speak for themselves and, you may be turning away allot of your traffic and new business if you don’t have a responsive site!
